Hot Girl Summer Is Over But Hustle Girl Season Is In Full Effect.
I recently become a Digital Merchandising
Assistant for a major departments store. I am only a month in, but I can
honestly say that this job is something I have been wanting for a very long
time. It incorporates everything I want in a career. I get the chance to work
with vendors, handle clothing and see my work reflected on the company’s
website. Not to mention it came with a nice salary! Although my new position is
a lot of work I finally feel at peace. Peace was something I longed for at my
last position.
I was previously a Fashion Copywriter for a luxury consignment company in New Jersey. This was my first real fashion job and I was very thankful for the opportunity to work in the field I love so much. Although grateful for the experience I honestly was not happy working there. The hours were exhausting, the commute was long, the work was repetitive and the pay was dismal. For most of my time there I was stressed for a few reasons. For one I wasn’t sure if I would ever get the opportunity to leave. I was there for over a year and I think after about four months with the company I started applying for new jobs. I knew very early on that this was not what I wanted to do. After applying to multiple jobs, getting a handful of interviews with no job offers I felt stranded. Not only was I in a career rut I was also in a financial one. Copywriting at my previous company was an entry level position and the pay reflected that. After rent and bills there was very little money left if any. Sometimes I even fell short on paying my important bills. Oh and did I mention that my commute to and from work was ridiculously expensive, around $12.75 a day!
I realized that my financial situation was not going to improve if I did not increase my income somehow. So I got a part-time job at a place I consider one of the happiest places on earth, Trader Joe’s. If you can remember, Trader Joe’s is the same place actor Geoffrey Owens was “job-shamed” for a while back. Apparently working at a grocery store is beneath much of society, but why? One Trader Joe’s is amazing and two what is wrong with working for the things you want and need. Let the world tell it, we should all be doing our dream jobs by the age of 24, making a six-figure salary and living a life nothing short of glamorous. Every second should be Instagram worthy. Newsflash real life ain’t that, real life means real work and no one has the right to tell you what types of employment are worthy of your time.
It was my part-time job that helped me pay for my nice car. It was my part-time job that helped me pay for my vacations. It was my part time job that helped me pay for food and helped keep a roof over my head. My new job and salary are both very nice, but I have no plans of ever forgetting the small jobs that’s took a chance on me and were there when I needed them.
Hustle baby hustle!
