Has Anyone Seen My Aesthetic?

If you are not familiar with the word aesthetic it is defined as “concerned with beauty or the appreciation of beauty” according to Google. In the era of social media, it is a word people use to explain their style. An aesthetic could be the way you dress, the colors you wear or even the way you take pictures. Your aesthetic is essentially who you are in a lot of ways. The issue I am having with aesthetics is that they seem so restricting. Don’t get me wrong I follow some pretty dope Instagrammers that have their aesthetics down packed and are still super versatile.  For instance, africanboheme takes beautiful pictures all around the world and they all incorporate the color yellow. One of my new favs thenxcvintage primary uses vibrant pastels in all her photos. Some influencer’s aesthetics are not as specific but still very strong. A great example of this is thevicstyles. She uses a mostly neutral color palette and incorporates nature and lots of natural light. Or victoriamisu who’s whole feed has a living art theme.

Seeing what people manage to do all within their claimed aesthetics made me feel like something was wrong with me when I could not quite nail mines down. The presser of finding an aesthetic made me nervous. I was afraid to claim the title of blogger or make post related to style until I had mines down. What would be my signature filter? Would I only wear certain colors? Would I always wear just one color? What would I choose? Who would I be?

Some of my friends gave me pointers. One was that my page should have a flow. All my post should tie into one another. Great advice but nothing I like goes together. I listen to Gucci Mane and Sade. I admire the style choices of both Ru Paul and Victoria Beckham. I love my natural afro, but I also enjoy a nice long weave. I’m versatile to say the least, but so are those with very strong styles and aesthetics. Which brought me back to thinking that there was something wrong with me. I started to doubt that I had a good enough sense of my personal style or self. Then I realized that I have a pretty good grasp on who I am and what I like.

Allowing this one thing to hold me back from doing something that I really wanted to give a try started to feel pointless. I decided that my aesthetic would find me and if it didn't that was fine too. The only strong tie between the things I post now is that they bring me joy so I wanted to share them. The color schemes are all different as well as the filters and edits, but I feel that they are special. I hope the things I share bring a little joy and inspiration to someone’s timeline, even if it doesn’t all necessarily flow.

I’m aiming to be your aestheticless fav!
